Images from the Southwest United States
The American Southwest is a magical place for photography. As I consider all the great artists who found their muse in this seemingly barren and arid part of the continent (such as Ansel Adams, Alan Ross, Georgia O'Keeffe, R. C. Gorman, Juanita DuBray, Albert Lujan, and many, many others), I only hope my attempts to make meaningful images here will be successful. This is a land of high drama and contrasts combining my favorite visual tools of light, shadow, tone, and textures found in mountains, rocks, trees, water, and the works of all the various human cultures that have inhabited this region, and continue to do so. Given my work on the missions of San Antonio, Texas, I am drawn to the similar examples of sacred architecture. Also, the mountains of the American West are much younger than the Appalachians; they are higher, more rugged, less worn, and with fewer trees hiding the dramatic cracks, crevasses, ridges, and geological wonders. The Southwest is a place I hope to explore with my cameras for many years to come.
